Abyssal Creatures New Album
Social Awkwardness
My band Abyssal Creatures just released our new album titled Social Awkwardness. It is about being comfortable with feeling socially uncomfortable.
Abyssal Creatures started off as an art project, not so much a band. With my first album I would scream and yell on an acoustic guitar about obscure political subjects. It was a convenient way to make art without involving myself as a subject.
Over a year ago I decided I wanted to change Abyssal Creatures into a band that was more introspective and personal. My music started expressing my feelings that I don’t fit in with the society that surrounds me. I noticed that at times I’m strangely comfortable with being out of place in this society and other times I’m extremely uncomfortable with it. This became the theme of the album Social Awkwardness.
Sonically I wanted to make an album that people could dance to. I did this because it seems as if people aren’t listening to my lyrics when I play live. So my goal for the content of the album was to subliminally write songs that say it’s a good thing to be weird. I hope that when we play live or someone listens to our CD, we alter closed-minded people who are wrapped up in the idea of being “cool” within the standards set by main stream society. I hope that we open these people’s heads to the freedom that being weird and different and letting your freak flag fly is excellent.
My name is Ian Fellerman and I’m from Massachusetts. I’m the head writer for Abyssal Creatures. I performed and wrote the guitar, vocals, drum programming, keyboards and synth bass. As I could not afford to pay companies to do the recording, engineering, mixing and mastering of the album, I had to do this myself and I did the best I could. I listened to different albums to see how bands that hired professional companies put together their recorded sound. I also spent a long time reading books on sound production. DJ Super Pooper co-programmed the drums and Paul Jung played bass guitar. We all now live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and form a live band playing only original music from our new CD.
Is this a dance record? Is this my first pop album? Is it still punk? I think it’s all these things but we are calling it “electronic-noise-pop”.
We hope you will review our album, interview us, come to our live performances and give us radio play. We are looking for companies to distribute our records, produce our albums and manage our live shows and public relations. Please see a video montage of our 2011 shows on our Video page. I hope you enjoy this album as I put a whole year of my life, heart and body into it.
Sincerely,
Ian Fellerman
